Support for analysis of existing charity data and provision of a database and dashboard for future use

Homeopathy UK is the UK’s leading charity for the promotion of homeopathy. We want everyone to understand the value of homeopathy and be able to access high-quality treatment from registered healthcare professionals.

What we do:
The request
The charity holds existing patient data that they would like to summarise and analyse to understand their customer base and the impact homeopathy is having on patients in terms of improvements in symptoms and underlying conditions.

Currently data is being captured at each clinic separately across the UK via Excel spreadsheets. The charity would like this data consolidated and would also like to have discussions around improvements to their current data capture mechanism.

Going forward, they would like to have the ability to interrogate their data – currently they have no in-house resource to do this, but with the help of the volunteer statistician, they would ideally like to have the ability to create annual summary metrics independently.

The approach
Data from 42 spreadsheets (2,500 appointments) were shared with the Statisticians for Society volunteer, consisting of demographic, health conditions, treatment and patient impact details.  The data were cleaned and consolidated.  The volunteer worked with the charity to develop summary tables, visualisations and key metrics to tell the story of the growth of the clinics, build a picture of their patients and their journeys and measure the charity’s impact on the patient’s health condition and wellbeing.

The result
Several deliverables were provided to the charity including: an executive report which summarised the data visually and in text, an Excel dashboard that the charity will be able to maintain and use for quarterly and annual summary statistics going forward and an updated data collection spreadsheet with enhanced validation and instructions for use. The volunteer also presented to the charity’s Trustees about the project and the work was well received.

Impact and benefits
Homeopathy UK has gained a better understanding of their patient base as well as the positive impact of homeopathy on patients' symptoms and underlying conditions. The analysis of data has revealed crucial insights into how we can improve patient outcomes in our clinics by enhancing communication and education about homeopathy and our services to the public.

It was a pleasure to work with Jenny, whose expertise and insights have proved invaluable to the success of the project. Her enthusiasm and eagerness to understand how homeopathy works have significantly contributed to the quality of the project's success.
