Stian Westlake, Chief executive
Stian leads the RSS on a programme of activities that take forward its strategic goals, including the Society’s Covid-19 Task Force, Data Manifesto and National Lottery-funded initiative, Statisticians for Society.
Stian was previously policy advisor to three successive ministers for universities and science. Before then he was an executive director at Nesta (2009-2017) where he ran the organisation’s think tank. Under his leadership, the team launched a range of initiatives on data and evidence, including the Alliance for Useful Evidence, the Innovation Growth Lab and the Innovation Index (in partnership with ONS). Stian is co-author of Capitalism Without Capital, a book about intangible investment and the economy. He is also a governor of the National Institute for Economic and Social Research and advisory board member of the Institute for Community Studies.
Nicola Emmerson, Director of membership and professional affairs
Nicola directs the work of the membership and professional affairs team, which includes all aspects of membership administration, member benefit delivery and professional development. Nicola has held a variety of roles during her career at the Society, and currently focuses on delivery of the membership strategy with particular emphasis on growth, retention and engagement. Before joining us, Nicola worked for a number of voluntary sector organisations and has a Master’s degree in voluntary sector management.
Iain Wilton, Director of policy and public affairs
Iain directs the Society’s policy, public affairs and external relations work. His team’s responsibilities include the production of our member newsletter, Significance magazine and the RSS’s policy briefing papers for MPs and peers. Iain’s team also organises the RSS Statistical Ambassadors network, as well as our award-winning 'Statistics of the Year' initiative and the annual Statistical Excellence Awards. Iain has a doctorate from Queen Mary, University of London and has previously worked for the BBC, the Cabinet Office and the University of Essex. He has also written a biography of the sportsman, writer and politician CB Fry.
