Leadership: senior management team

Chief executiveDr Sarah Cumbers, Chief executive

With a background in evidence-based policy and practice, Sarah was previously the director of evidence and insights at the global charity, Lloyd’s Register Foundation. She is chair of the Evidence Quarter, a community interest company that brings together evidence-minded organisations to increase collaboration and tackle joint challenges. Previously Sarah spent much of her career at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), working across a number of roles including evaluation of medicines, management of information services, and development of guideline methodology.

Director of membership and professional affairsNicola Emmerson, Director of membership and professional affairs

Nicola directs the work of the membership and professional affairs team, which includes all aspects of membership administration, member benefit delivery and professional development. Nicola has held a variety of roles during her career at the Society, and currently focuses on delivery of the membership strategy with particular emphasis on growth, retention and engagement. Before joining us, Nicola worked for a number of voluntary sector organisations and has a Master’s degree in voluntary sector management.
 

Finance directorCharlotte Stovell, Finance director

Charlotte is responsible for designing the Society’s financial strategy, including assessment of future opportunities and risks, understanding of the commercial and mission-oriented aspects of the Society’s work, and analysis of long-term financial sustainability. Charlotte has been a long serving employee of the Society and the finance team at the RSS.
 

Director of training and commercialStuart McKendrick, Director of training and commercial

Stuart leads our commercial and events team which has responsibility for the annual conference, training, society events, venue hire plus marketing and advertising. Stuart’s main focus is on delivering the Society’s growth plans for these areas. Prior to joining us, Stuart worked in the construction and oil and gas industries.


Director of IT and digitalJack Beeby, Director of IT and digital

Jack leads our digital team that is responsible for the RSS website, social media, newsletters, videos and podcasts. He also manages IT infrastructure, CRM, digital projects and external suppliers. Jack is focussed on ensuring that technology allows the RSS to communicate effectively with its members and adapt to their needs. Jack has a background in web development and digital marketing in both the private and charity sectors.
