We are accepting entries for this year’s Statistical Excellence in Journalism Awards, sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
The awards celebrate journalists who have used statistics to aid public understanding by questioning, analysing and investigating the issues that matter.
Now in their 19th year, previous winners include those from the BBC, Guardian and the Financial Times, among other publications.
There are four categories – investigative journalism, data visualisation, ‘explaining the facts’ and ‘best statistical commentary by a non-journalist’, which recognises the contribution of researchers and experts to the media discourse.
The awards are free to enter and open to writers and broadcasters both in and outside of the UK. We would particularly like to hear from those who are early-career or are from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Scott Heald, RSS vice president for external affairs and chair of the judging panel, said: ‘The media plays a crucial role in bringing clarity and context to the numbers behind the stories that shape our lives. I’m looking forward to another year of fantastic entries and celebrating all the good work being done with data.’
Beccy Shipman, ESRC deputy director of data strategy and infrastructure, said: ‘In our milestone 60th year of funding research and innovation that delivers economic and social benefits globally, we're proud to continue our support of the Statistical Excellence in Journalism Awards. These awards showcase the use of statistics and informed commentary, by journalists and scientists, to address complex challenges and tell compelling stories that both inform and inspire. They celebrate those who make data meaningful and accessible to all. I look forward to reading this year's innovative submissions.’
The deadline for entries is Wednesday 12 March.
