Teaching Statistics
The Teaching Statistics Section was established in 2022 following a successful three-year run as a special interest group. The Section provides a platform to collate and disseminate ideas and best practice in the teaching of statistics.
The section aims is to build a community of practice in the teaching and learning of statistics, its scholarship, and its research. The section target statistics educators, which includes those working in post-18 education, including higher education and professional training. The section also promotes teaching excellence in statistics to increase statistical literacy among students, as student involvement in the section will be necessary and beneficial in achieving the goals of the section. The section achieves this through organsing various of events and UK Conference on Teaching Statistics.

Remit
The current remit for the section focuses on teaching statistics in the following arenas:
- Post-18 education, including further and higher education
- Professional training
and has the following specific aims:
- To promote good teaching practice in statistics in higher education, post-18 education and professional training.
- To promote innovative use of technology in teaching statistics.
- To promote inclusivity and creativity in preferred choices of statistical packages for educational purposes through recognising the diversity of learners and teaching contexts represented by our target audiences.
- To facilitate the discussion of modernising statistics curricula for both specialist and non-specialist students in higher education, learning from institutions – including internationally – who have successfully implemented curricula combining modern statistics with areas such as computing, Machine Learning, AI and data science.
- To promote good assessment practices in higher education for specialist and non- specialist learners.
- To promote the study of statistics to students in higher and other post-18 education, either as a specialist pathway or as a valuable part of another discipline.
- To promote statistics education generally, highlighting the importance of statistical literacy.
- To facilitate discussion around online versus face-to-face statistics education.
- To promote research in statistics education as a means of improving practice.
- To identify shortcomings in statistics education and organise meetings or other events to bring the community together to discuss the matters highlighted.
