RSS welcomes AI Opportunities Action Plan and calls for focus on evaluation, regulation and education

Our AI Task Force has released a position paper on the UK government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, welcoming the ambitious goal of establishing the UK as a global leader in AI.

The plan sets out very welcome goals for making the UK a leader in AI, but  greater emphasis on statistical expertise will be necessary in order to make it successful. The position paper particularly highlights the need for:

  • Distinguishing genuine innovation from imitation
  • Infrastructure that can monitor and retrain AI models
  • Strong regulation to ensure transparency and safety in both public and private sector AI, potentially making the AI Safety Institute a statutory auditing body
  • A focus in the public sector on areas where accuracy and safety can be demonstrated
  • Broadening access to AI careers by fostering diverse talent pipelines, including socio-economic diversity and apprenticeship opportunities
  • AI-related academic programs to align with industry needs, with accrediting bodies such as the RSS ensuring high standards
  • Prioritization of energy efficiency and accessibility for startups, scale-ups and academic users

We will continue to engage with policymakers, offering the expertise of our members to ensure the UK’s AI strategy delivers on its potential while safeguarding public trust and resources.
