RSS responds to consultation on establishment of new national academy for mathematical sciences

Following the recent announcement of government funding for a new national academy for the mathematical sciences, the RSS has responded to a consultation with the community regarding the set up of the new academy and its priorities.

The RSS, through the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS),  previously worked with the wider community to develop a joint response to the government’s consultation. We have also now submitted our own response, highlighting the points that we think are especially important.

The RSS supports CMS’s recommendation that the existing proto-Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci) should be established as the national academy – rather than a new organisation established from scratch. There are a few points that we think are especially important to consider for the wider statistics and data community in the establishment of any academy:
  • The breadth of sectors and disciplines in the mathematical sciences, including areas such as data science and AI, which can drive innovation and productivity and should have a prominent place in the new institution
  • The representation of maths teachers from schools and colleges in the new academy, as strong links with teachers will be essential for understanding the needs of school-age children and maintaining interest in mathematics throughout the educational pipeline
  • Collaboration with other organisations in the mathematical sciences space and advocating for inclusivity and cooperation to ensure the success and coherence of the academy.
