As part of its review of curriculum and assessment in the UK, the Department for Education (DfE) sent out a call for evidence. We have now submitted our response with recommendations for modernising the curriculum and assessments to ensure students develop the statistical, data and quantitative skills needed for future study, work and day-to-day life.
The detailed response covers a broad range of topics, from emphasising concepts like the statistical investigative cycle to increased focus on using relevant, engaging examples and exploring real-world data.
Some of our key recommendations include:
-
Greater emphasis on data science, statistical reasoning and quantitative literacy across all stages of education, incorporating engaging real-world examples and digital tools (for example, data visualisation software)
-
Using non-exam assessment (coursework or projects) to better reflect the practical nature of statistics and adopting an assessment approach that allows specific skills to be tracked, as well as developing an alternative pathway to replace the need for numerous GCSE re-sits for those who have not passed
In August, we also published our key recommendations for the statistics curriculum in the UK, where we go into further detail on many of these topics.
