Dionne Price, 1971-2024

Fellows will be very sad to learn that Dionne Price, recent past president of the American Statistical Association (ASA) passed away on 22 February.

Dionne became the first African-American president of the ASA in January 2023 and her tenure focused on the need to engage young people in statistics, the role of statistics in science policy and recognising the value of statisticians.

After completing her PhD in 2000, Dionne had a successful career in biostatistics, recently serving as deputy director of the Office of Biostatistics in the Food and Drug Administration Office of Translational Sciences, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. She was also an active member of the International Biometric Society and the FDA Statistical Association.

Ron Wasserstein, Executive Director of the ASA said ‘My heart is broken at the loss of this remarkable colleague and friend. Dionne was wise and kind, skillful and humble, thoughtful and generous. Her passing leaves an enormous void, but her leadership will leave a legacy. I miss her dearly, as do the many others touched by her life.’

Our sincere condolences go out to Dionne’s family, colleagues and friends at this time.

A full tribute has been published on the ASA’s website.
