We have announced the William Guy Lecturers for the next academic year, who are set to inspire school children about statistics in the world around them.
The prestigious William Guy Lectureship selects three statisticians each year to record and deliver talks about statistics for primary, secondary and sixth form schools and colleges around a specific theme. This year, the theme ‘statistics in plain sight’ will encourage young people to recognise the relevance of statistics and data to their everyday lives.
With one lecturer and topic picked for each age group, the William Guy Lecturers will be available for requests from 1 August, and the lectures will also be available on YouTube from the start of the academic year.
This year’s successful candidates are:

Mary Gregory, Interim Director of Population Statistics, Office for National Statistics, with her talk ‘From sweets to streets: Understanding the world through statistics’ (for ages 5–11)

Nicola Rennie, Lecturer in Health Data Science, Lancaster University, with her talk ‘From lab to patient: How statistics shape decisions in medical treatment’ (for ages 11–16)

Mike Campbell, Emeritus Professor of Medical Statistics, University of Sheffield, with his talk ‘Can I really believe that number? Statistics and Covid-19’ (for age 16+).
