We are shocked and saddened to hear of the death of our current Series C joint editor and former RSS Council member, Professor Richard Boys.
Richard was a professor of applied statistics at Newcastle University, where he led its statistics research group. He was an applied Bayesian statistician with a wide range of interests and published papers in all three series of the Society's journal. Much of his recent work focused on inference for partially observed stochastic processes, particularly in stochastic systems biology, hidden Markov models and inference in complex systems using emulators.
Richard made substantial contributions to the work of the RSS; he was appointed editor of JRSS-C in 2017, having previously been an associate editor of the journal from 1996 to 1999 and from 2007 to 2010. He was also a former member of the Society's Council (2004–2007) and a senior examiner for the Society’s examinations; more recently he chaired the Society’s graduate training programme, which ran annual courses for second- and third-year doctoral students in statistics.
Our thoughts are with Richard’s friends and family at this sad time.
