Adrian Smith joins expert committee to boost UK’s AI sector

Former RSS president and Alan Turing Institute chief executive, Adrian Smith, has joined other leaders from business, academia and data privacy organisations on an independent expert committee created to help boost the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK.

The committee, which also includes Ocado’s chief technology officer Paul Clarke, Patricia Hodgson from the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation and UKRI chief executive Mark Walport, will look at the skills, ethics and data needed for the UK to make the most of AI technologies.

The new AI Council forms part of a raft of initiatives aiming to put the UK at the forefront of emerging technologies. Business Secretary Greg Clark explained that it would be ‘a key part of our modern Industrial Strategy – investing now to secure the UK’s position on the world stage in these cutting edge technologies.’
