This webinar introduces the Social Model of Disability which the Welsh Government has adopted instead of the traditional Medical Model of Disability. The Social Model of Disability distinguishes between ‘impairment’ and ‘disability’. It says that people with impairments are disabled by barriers in society, such as negative attitudes or physical barriers, which can prevent disabled people’s inclusion and participation.
There will be three presentations:
Katherine Thomas, Welsh Government – ‘Introduction to the Social Model of Disability’
Prof Debbie Foster, Cardiff University – ‘The Social Model of Disability: A Policy Context’
