As part of Members Week, we would like to celebrate our members contribution and achievements within the RSS work. The event will focus on some of the areas our members have participated in where they have made a difference. Some of the talks you can expect are;
Public Statistics: How important is it? - Paul Allin
Official statistics have an important role in society, as statistics for the public good. The RSS's National Statistics Advisory Group has been exploring this and has published a vision for evolving official statistics into pubic statistics. In this short talk, Paul Allin will summarise the idea of public statistic and why they are needed, and report on how the RSS proposal has been recognised by the UK Statistics Authority, the body that overseas UK official statistics.
Statisticians for Society: Seven years later - Rob Mastrodomenico
Rob Mastrodomenico is the chair for Statisticians for Society (S4S) initiative. The initiative aims to support small charities that are in need of a statistician to support them with their data. The initiative has been supporting charities for seven year. Rob will share his journey of his involvement in S4S and the impact it has made to charities.
Setting up a successful SIG – Altea Lorenzo
Altea is an elected council member of the Royal Statistical Society, a member of the Society's AI Task-Force, chair of the Celebrating Diversity Special Interest Group, and secretary of the History of Statistics Section. Altea will share her experiences in setting up Celebrating Diversity Special Interest Group and the work they successful work they have achieved so far since becoming a SIG in 2024.
Altea Lorenzo Arribas, Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS)
Dr Altea Lorenzo-Arribas is a socio-economic statistician working on interdisciplinary projects with researchers at the Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Research Institutions, and other national international organisations. Altea is also a member of the Women Committee of the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research, and the Spanish Biostatistics Network (Biostatnet).
Paul Allin
Paul Allin is the RSS Honorary Officer for National Statistics and a visiting professor in statistics at Imperial College London. His research interests are the measurement of national wellbeing and progress, and the use of these measures in politics, policy, business and everyday life. Paul spent forty years as a professional statistician, researcher and policy analyst in various UK government departments and agencies. He set up and directed the Measuring National Wellbeing programme at the UK Office for National Statistics.
