The Annual General Meeting of the RSS West Midlands Local Group will be followed by a talk by Professor Jonathan Rougier.

Abstract

Geohazards, like volcanic eruptions, are a major feature in our risk landscape.  I'll talk about geohazards, and how we assess the risk they pose.  We have to use the historical and geological archive to estimate the 'exceedance probability' curve, which represents the relationship between event size and frequency.  But this is tricky, because recording rates in the archive drop as we go back in time, at different rates for different event sizes, and in different parts of the world.  So how can we identify the 'reliable' history of a geohazard?
