Title: Sports Ranking - Principles and Practice

Abstract:
Round-robin league structures are ubiquitous, appearing all over the world and in many sports. The ranking method of aggregating points is undisputed in this format. But incomplete leagues where it is not the case that everyone plays everyone else - perhaps for logistical, historical or commercial reasons - are also common. They occur in school and (US) college sport, and in amateur sport more generally, as well as more recently because of COVID19 season disruptions. This talk will address how we might think about ranking in such situations - some of the prominent alternative approaches, what we might learn from round-robins, and how we might assess the approaches used in some high-profile cases.
