Guide: UK official statistics on climate change

Produced by the RSS Climate Change and Net Zero Task Force, this guide provides information on the various sources of UK climate change statistics. It explains the role of ‘official statistics’ as well as other statistics on climate change. It explores the data gaps and the scope for obtaining more official statistics on climate change.

Official statistics have an important role in informing decision-making about climate change for a wide range of stakeholders, from local government to businesses to researchers. They also inform and empower citizens, enabling stakeholders to hold government to account.

As part of our work on public statistics, we are examining how we can capitalise on increasing the data available to answer society’s most important questions – including on climate change.

The guide covers nine areas:

  1. What are climate change statistics?
  2. UK official statistics on climate change
  3. Met Office statistics on climate change
  4. The definition and role of “official statistics”
  5. Other statistics and data to help fill gaps and to get a more comprehensive picture of climate change
