Inspire the next generation: William Guy Lectureship 2025/26 open for applicants

Applications are now open for the RSS William Guy Lectureships 2025/26, with the theme of ‘Statistics and AI’.

The William Guy Lectureship

Each year, we appoint three lecturers to these prestigious volunteer roles to prepare and deliver short talks to school children of different ages, to inspire them about statistics.

Previous topics of the talks have included the role of statistics in understanding climate change, and statistics in plain sight.

Statistics and AI

This year’s theme reflects the increasing impact statistics and AI has on the lives of children and young people. We particularly seek the talks to highlight the importance of statistics in AI.

Topics you might explore include how statistics drives the AI we see in everyday life (eg entertainment platform recommendations); ethical issues eg bias and how to assess if algorithms are fair; data sharing and handling; the environmental implications of AI; and how AI helps statisticians, among many others.

How can I apply?

We invite applications from statisticians and data scientists from across industry, academia, education and the charity sector as well as other relevant sectors, and from a range of career stages and locations around the UK.

We are seeking fellows with passion and enthusiasm for inspiring school students about AI and statistics. The deadline for applications is midday on 19 March.

Please see the RSS William Guy webpages for further details and how to apply.
