The Young Statisticians Section (YSS) held its first committee meeting on 7 February 2024 at the headquarters of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) in Errol Street, London. We have decided that the focus of this year will be the 2024 RSS Conference, with a key emphasis on making the pre-conference day workshop accessible to non-researchers. The YSS submitted 12 session proposals for the RSS Conference at the end of last year, and all but one of these proposals was accepted. We have now begun to identify speakers and plan other aspects of our conference sessions.
In addition to our conference sessions, we have a few other events in the works that will be held either later this year or at the start of the next calendar year. This will hopefully include two larger, in-person events: a hackathon in collaboration with S4S and a careers event. Other planned activities include the annual Significance Writing Competition, the Secret Statistician webinar, and an online session that will be a part of the International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science.
Our second committee meeting of the year was held on 17 May 2024 at Lancaster University. We discussed our ongoing events programme and the possibility of collaborating with other RSS sections to host sessions.
