Volunteer sought for Statisticians for Society Committee

We are looking for a new member to serve on the Scoping Committee of the Statisticians for Society initiative. Statisticians for Society was established to enable members of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) to donate their time and skills to organisations in the third sector that require pro bono statistical expertise. You can read more about past Statisticians for Society projects here.

What is involved?
The committee member will be involved in scoping individual projects submitted by organisations to determine the statistical requirements and skillset needed for delivery. They will assess candidate applications, help assign suitable volunteers, and check that the proposed work to be delivered meets the organisation’s needs. They will also be involved in analysing data from the initiative and evaluating our impact against its objectives and outcomes.

We are looking for an RSS fellow with statistical expertise and 5 years or more field experience, who can demonstrate the following experience and attributes:

  • Consultancy skills
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to define, evaluate and critique projects, and to communicate this to others
  • Knowledge of the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (desirable)

For the committee, we would particularly welcome interest from RSS fellows based in Northern Ireland, as we work to grow and spread our offer to more organisations in this UK nation.

The Scoping Committee meets twice a year (usually at our Errol Street office or via Microsoft Teams), to discuss the strategic direction of the programme. In between meetings, communication will be by email. There will be an induction along with opportunities to shadow other scoping committee members.
