The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) is looking for an enthusiastic individual who would like to volunteer as a tutor in statistics based at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Limbe, Cameroon, starting from February 2022 for the duration of five months.
The AIMS programme is a 12-month course, intended to prepare African graduates with mathematically-based degrees for postgraduate study and employment. There is a lively group of resident tutors at AIMS, but no specialist statistics tutor. The tutor will provide statistical support to students in the use of R, discussing approaches to problems, and helping with written English. As part of this role, the tutor will also support students in writing their essay projects, will liaise with the other tutors at AIMS and the offsite supervisors of each student.
Being a statistics tutor at AIMS is a unique and enriching experience. Essential traits of the tutor are flexibility and a sense of humour. Read about the experience of Jean Rizk, our RSS tutor for 2019.
The call is open to fellows of the RSS holding or approaching completion of a PhD in statistics. The opportunity may fit in after submitting a thesis, or appeal to a retired colleague. Travel, visa and vaccination expenses will be covered by the RSS while AIMS Cameroon will provide accommodation and meals.
To express interest, candidates should email their CV and a statement letter of no more than 500 words to e.giorgi@lancaster.ac.uk. In the letter, the applicant should state the period of their availability and provide evidence of what makes them an ideal candidate by drawing from their experience and qualifications.
The deadline for expressions of interest is Monday 1 November 2021.
For informal enquiries, please contact e.giorgi@lancaster.ac.uk
