Nuffield research placement scheme seeks STEM experts

SETPOINT is an educational charity that promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to young people in the East of England. SETPOINT work with the Nuffield Foundation to offer year 12 students (aged 17) the opportunity to work alongside a STEM expert for four to six weeks of their summer holiday.

What’s required?

SETPOINT is looking for supervisors who can provide a student with a research project that achieves agreed learning outcomes. Although a named supervisor is required to oversee the project, the supervision may be shared between colleagues. Whilst supportive supervision is important, the students are encouraged to use their own initiative. The placement maybe a standalone project or may form part of a larger project; however, it must be achievable within a 4-5 week period.

Who are the students?

SETPOINT select talented students who have just finished their first year of A level, and are about to make their university choices. The scheme is designed to widen participation to students from low income homes or other under-represented groups, which can contribute to the students successfully receiving a university place.  Under-represented schools and colleges are also to encourage participation amongst their students, helping generate crucial links with local schools and teachers.

This a national scheme and more information can be found on the case study.
