Two of the editors for Series A and Series C of the RSS journal series will be finishing their terms of office at the end of 2020.
Suggestions or nominations are therefore encouraged and welcomed from members of the Society. Although the editors’ work is mainly concerned with the assessment of manuscripts for publication in the journal in collaboration with their editorial panels, Joint editors of the journal series are also involved in the on-going formulation and review of policy with the publishers (Wiley) and the Publications Network of Advisors. The editorships of the Society’s journals are important and prestigious positions but they are also demanding and time consuming. The people who undertake them perform an invaluable service for the Society. The normal term of office is four years.
About the journals
Series A (Statistics in Society) publishes high quality papers that demonstrate how statistical design and analyses play a vital role in all walks of life and benefit society in general. For example, applications of statistical methods in medicine, business and commerce, industry, economics and finance, education and teaching, physical and biomedical sciences, the environment, the law, government and politics, demography, psychology, sociology and sport all fall within the journal’s remit.
The journal is aimed at a wide statistical audience and at professional statisticians in particular. Its emphasis is on well-written and clearly reasoned quantitative approaches to problems in the real world rather than the exposition of technical detail. Of particular aim is to publish papers on contentious or topical statistical issues, such as in ‘data science’, papers which give reviews or exposés of current statistical concerns and papers which demonstrate how appropriate statistical thinking has contributed to our understanding of important substantive questions.
Series C (Applied Statistics) is concerned with papers which deal with novel solutions to real-life statistical problems. The content of the journal is motivated by practical examples and statistical data of all kinds, rather than by methodological developments. The subject-matter covers the whole range of interdisciplinary fields, eg: applications in agriculture, genetics, industry, medicine and the physical sciences.
The papers make a novel contribution to statistics by adapting or developing methodology or by demonstrating the proper application of new or existing statistical methods. A deep understanding of statistical methodology is not necessary to appreciate the content. Although papers describing developments in statistical computing are within its scope, the journal is not concerned with brief numerical illustrations or simulation studies. The emphasis of Applied Statistics is on statistical analyses in practice.

- Jouni Kuha (Chair and continuing Joint Editor), Mario Cortina Borja (University College London) and Harvey Goldstein (University of Bristol) for Series A, and
- Nial Friel (Chair and continuing Joint Editor), Shirley Coleman (University of Newcastle) and David Firth (University of Warwick) for Series C.
