Profile

My expertise is in modelling problems in biomedical science and public health, meta-research, research methodology, statistics, and health systems. I research and consult on population health, oncology, medical statistics, public health, tumour models, and have extensive experience in data analysis, statistics, and imaging. I also have expertise in societal understanding of science and medicine, writing, and broadcasting, as well as experience in health policy, screening programmes, health disinformation, and consultancy. I advise for media outlets around the world on communication of science, and consult on disinformation for outlets worldwide. I am also an accomplished lecturer, having lectured at Universities including the University of Oxford, Queen's University Belfast, Dublin City University, and Trinity College Dublin. I am also an author and broadcaster. My first book, the "The Irrational Ape - Why we fall for conspiracy theory, disinformation, and propaganda" (Simon & Schuster UK, US title: "Good Thinking - Why Flawed Logic Puts us all at Risk and How Critical Thinking Can Save the World) was an Irish Times top 5 bestseller. I contribute to outlets including the Guardian, New York Times, Scientific American, the Atlantic, The Observer, the Irish Times, and many others, and broadcast with BBC, RTE, PBS, and many others worldwide on radio and television. I have authored over 100 pieces on topics as diverse as health myths, vaccination, pseudoscience, epidemiology, statistics, climate change, and disinformation. I won the 2014 Sense About Science / Nature Maddox Prize, and was induced as a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inqury in 2022.
