Recent disruptions to the global financial system have merely underscored the importance of a well-coordinated financial sector safety net.  Deposit insurance is a fundamental tool to protect depositors and contribute to financial stability.  The International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) was formed in May 2002 to enhance the effectiveness of deposit insurance systems by promoting guidance and international cooperation. Throughout we explore key metrics for appraising the effectiveness of deposit insurance systems and provide a snapshot of the current landscape.

Ryan Defina has been working out of the Switzerland-based International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) since July 2018.  He is a senior researcher with a focus on pertinent issues relating to deposit insurance and financial stability, contributing to numerous IADI publications.  He also leads the statistics and reporting function within IADI.  Previously, Ryan was a central banker at the Reserve Bank of Australia and a statistical methodologist at the Australian Bureau of Statistics.  Beyond his day-to-day activities, Ryan is chair of the Royal Statistical Society’s Finance and Economics Section.
