We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2023 Mardia interdisciplinary workshop prize is Professor Jane Hutton of the Department of Statistics, University of Warwick.
Founded by RSS fellow Kanti Mardia, the Mardia Prize was created to fund cutting-edge interdisciplinary workshops bringing together statisticians with researchers from other scientific communities. Funding of £6,000–£8,000 is made available over two years to support these workshops.
Professor Jane Hutton plans to hold a series of interdisciplinary workshops on Statistics and the Law. Some sessions will focus on statisticians listening to the views and perceived needs of participants in the legal system in order to inform further work. Other sessions will present statistical methods which address questions raised by legal processes, and debate approaches to more effective use of statistical design and analysis techniques.
Professor Hutton said: ‘I am pleased and honoured to be given this opportunity to extend the contributions which the Royal Statistical Society has made to statistics, law and the justice system. I am sure that data scientists and statisticians can collaborate in effective use of existing data. Increased understanding of legal processes will provide opportunities to improve access and efficiency, and deliver accurate and equitable outcomes.’
