We are accepting entries for this year’s Statistical Excellence in Journalism Awards, sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
The awards celebrate journalists who use statistics to support public understanding by questioning, analysing and investigating the issues that matter.
Now in their 21st year, previous winners include journalists from the BBC, the Guardian and the Financial Times, among others.
There are four categories: investigative journalism, data visualisation, explaining the facts, and best statistical commentary by a non-journalist, which recognises the contribution of researchers and experts to media discourse.
The awards are free to enter and open to writers and broadcasters both in and outside the UK. We would particularly like to hear from those who are early career or from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Scott Heald, RSS Vice President for External Affairs and Chair of the judging panel, said:
“The media plays a crucial role in bringing clarity and context to the numbers behind the stories that shape our lives. I’m looking forward to another year of fantastic entries and celebrating the excellent work being done with data.”
Beccy Shipman, ESRC Deputy Director of Data Strategy and Infrastructure, said:
“We are proud to continue our support of the Statistical Excellence in Journalism Awards. These awards showcase the use of statistics and informed commentary, by journalists and scientists, to address complex challenges and tell compelling stories that both inform and inspire. They celebrate those who make data meaningful and accessible to all. I look forward to reading this year’s innovative submissions.”
The deadline for entries is Friday 12 March.
