We are now accepting entries for our 2022 Statistical Excellence in Journalism Awards, sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Now in their 16th year, the awards celebrate writers and broadcasters who use statistics to question, analyse and investigate the issues that affect society. Journalists and reporters from the BBC, Guardian and Times have all been recognised in previous years.
For 2022, a new category, ‘Best statistical commentary by a non-journalist’ will be awarded to highlight the contribution of statisticians and data scientists to the media on statistical issues related to the pandemic. Awards will also be presented to journalists for investigative journalism, data visualisation and ‘explaining the facts’.
Professor Christl Donnelly, RSS Vice President for external affairs and chair of the judging panel, said: ‘We have seen some outstanding examples of data journalism over the last couple of years, and these awards give us an excellent opportunity to celebrate the hard work of those in the media. I’m also looking forward to commending the work of statisticians and data scientists for their contribution to the media discourse.’
Catherine Bromley, ESRC Deputy Director of Data Strategy and Infrastructure, said: 'ESRC is delighted to support these awards. Research evidence and data can help the public separate fact from fiction, so it’s vital to celebrate excellent examples of journalism that does this effectively and helps build trust in statistics. I look forward to judging the entries and congratulating the winners.'
The deadline for entries is Monday 21 March.
