In this event we will be joined by Dr Florian Ostmann, who leads The Alan Turing Institute’s work on the AI Standards Hub, followed by an open and hopefully lively discussion around your questions and priorities in relation to this topic. The outcomes of the discussion will feed back into the AI Standards Hub’s work and inform future activities.

After Q&A we will be discussing how data science has changed. After a decade since data scientists were labelled the "sexiest job of the 21st century" we want to ask you how the reality is shaping up in London.

What are your hopes? What are your worries? How do you work with other parts of an organisation? Does your manager understand what you're doing?

We will be delving into the details of the day to day and the promise of the future.

This is an in-person event only

This event is kindly sponsored by Napier

Details on AI standards
Jurisdictions around the world are pursuing differing strategic approaches to regulating AI, but increasingly share a common theme in the recognition of international standards as a key tool for the achievement of regulatory and governance objectives. Prominent examples of this trend include the UK Government’s recently published AI Regulation White Paper as well as the EU’s proposed AI Act.

In response to the rapidly growing importance of AI standardisation, last year saw the establishment of the AI Standards Hub in the UK. Forming part of the National AI Strategy, this initiative seeks to share knowledge, enable community building, provide training, and pursue strategic research around questions of standardisation for AI technologies – recognising that these questions can be complex and challenging to navigate for AI developers and other relevant stakeholders.

Topics covered during the session will include:

The AI Standards Hub’s mission and resources
The role of standards in the context of the UK’s AI Regulation White Paper and the EU’s AI Act
The most important international standards development organisations in the AI context and pathways for contributing to the standards developed by them
The current landscape of AI standards
The difference between standards development organisations and professional standards bodies
