RSS opinion in BMJ: statistics is important in medical misconduct cases

The Chair of our Statistics in the Law Section, Amy L Wilson, and our Chief Executive, Sarah Cumbers have co-authored an opinion piece commissioned by the BMJ examining the role of statistical reasoning in medical misconduct cases.

The article focuses on the importance of robust statistical methods, and the careful interpretation of uncertainty in legal settings. Drawing on past cases and existing guidance, it outlines common challenges in the use of statistical evidence and highlights the value of involving professional statisticians in complex investigations.

The piece does not comment on individual cases or court decisions. Instead, it reflects the Society’s long-standing and continuing work on promoting good statistical practice wherever statistics are used, including in the justice system.
