Our warm congratulates go to a group of our fellows who have been appointed to the inaugural fellowship of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci), announced today.
The publication of this list marks a historic moment for the UK’s mathematical sciences community. Sitting alongside the UK’s other national academies, AcadMathSci will provide a powerful new voice for mathematics in public life, bringing together expertise from academia, education, industry, business and government to address some of the most pressing challenges facing society.
We are delighted to see so many RSS fellows recognised among this first cohort, reflecting the central role that statistics and data science play across the mathematical sciences and in national decision-making.
RSS fellows appointed to the academy
Those named in AcadMathSci’s inaugural fellowship are:
John Aston
Chris Brignell
Andrew Cairns
Christl Donnelly
Idris Eckley
Eugenie Hunsicker
Elinor Jones
Ruth King
Adele Heather Marshall
Guy Nason
Richard Samworth
David Spiegelhalter
Paul J Sweeting
This cohort includes former RSS presidents, our current President and President Elect, as well as numerous officers and trustees, so there is much for us to celebrate. Together, they represent excellence across statistics, probability, actuarial science, data science and their applications — from public health and official statistics to finance, risk, communication and methodological innovation. Their leadership will help ensure that mathematics and statistics continue to serve society.
We look forward to working closely with AcadMathSci as it develops its programme of activity.
