Inspiring the next generation: applications open for the 2026/27 William Guy Lectureship

We are delighted to announce that applications are now open for the 2026/27 William Guy Lectureship. This prestigious lectureship supports statisticians and data scientists in delivering engaging, accessible talks that inspire school students and deepen their understanding of how statistics shape the world around them.

For the 2026/27 academic year, the lectureship will focus on the theme:

Statistics and Misinformation

We invite applications from statisticians and data scientists across industry, academia, education, and the charity sector who are passionate about communicating statistics to young people.

This year’s theme explores how statistical thinking can help students navigate and challenge the growing landscape of misinformation. We welcome talk proposals that address topics such as:

  • Interpreting uncertainty, probability and risk in real-world contexts

  • Understanding how data visualisations or statistical fallacies can distort or mislead

  • Examining bias in data collection, interpretation, and communication

  • Ethical considerations when working with data

  • The role of statistics in social media, journalism and everyday decision-making by individuals, businesses and policymakers

We encourage creative interpretations of the theme and innovative approaches to engaging young audiences. The William Guy Lectureship is an opportunity to showcase the real-world importance of statistics and help equip the next generation with critical data literacy skills.
