We have partnered with the Government Statistical Service (GSS) on a new initiative on the future of the statistics profession. The project will explore how the role is expected to change over the next decade, what training and skills will be needed and what external factors will influence any changes.
This is a key area of focus for both organisations. The RSS as the professional body for statisticians and other data professionals, and the GSS as the community for all UK civil servants working in the collection, production and communication of official statistics.
The project will investigate the role of the statistician in years to come to gain a better understanding of how to attract and retain talent and ensure the role is viewed as attractive, relevant and impactful.
As a first step, we held a roundtable with members of the GSS to discuss what aspects of the profession will remain constant over time, what will change and what external factors will impact the role. You can read the event report on our dedicated project page.
RSS CEO Dr Sarah Cumbers said ‘It’s essential that the statistics profession is equipped to meet future challenges and that we have a strong pipeline of talent. As a professional body we must ensure that our membership offering evolves to support our community as needs change. That’s why we’re excited to be working with the GSS on this project to explore the big questions that will help future-proof the profession.’
Joint Deputy Head of the GSS, Steve Ellerd-Elliott said ‘I am excited about this collaboration between the GSS and RSS to shape the future landscape for statisticians. Through working together, we can ensure that statisticians are supported in reaching their full potential and our profession remains at the forefront of innovation.’
