We are proud to announce that the 2025 Statistical Excellence Award for Trustworthiness, Quality and Value is awarded to Mental Health Innovations (MHI).
Awarded in partnership with the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) and Civil Service World, this award celebrates merit in the voluntary application of the principles of Trustworthiness, Quality and Value that are core to OSR’s Code of Practice for Statistics.
MHI operates Shout, the UK’s first and only free 24/7 text-based mental health support service that is also available to children and young people. By strictly adhering to the principles of TQV, they use anonymised data collected from this service to provide insight into mental health trends across the UK as well as in specific demographic and regional segments.
Following an impressively managed merger with The Mix, another large digital mental health service, MHI is building one of the largest datasets on youth mental health in the UK. This is used to improve the clarity and accessibility of mental health statistics which, in accordance with their commitment to value, MHI disseminate to stakeholders through a diverse set of routes including online reports, blogs, posts and in-person events.
Mark Ungless, Director of Data Science, AI and Research said:
‘We're absolutely delighted that Mental Health Innovations has won this year's Trustworthiness, Quality & Value award. Our work aims to generate mental health statistics and insights about our services, with a particular focus on children and young people. This award is a tribute to the high-quality work of our dedicated and innovative Data Insights Team, and the many other colleagues who collaborate with them.
He continued: ‘We will continue to build on the work recognised by this award to enhance our digital services and provide statistics and insights of value to others - including the wider sector, government, our service users, and the general public - to help achieve our mission to transform the mental health of the nation.’
Ed Humpherson, Director General for Regulation said:
‘MHI is a very exciting winner that is clearly trail blazing a new approach to providing mental health services by collecting data to help improve advice and access to treatment in this absolutely critical area.’
Dr Sarah Cumbers, Chief Executive of the Royal Statistical Society said:
‘Mental Health Innovations has shown how the principles of Trustworthiness, Quality and Value can be embedded into the heart of a data-driven organisation. Their work with Shout demonstrates how anonymised data, used responsibly and transparently, can generate powerful insights and help shape better support for those in need. Congratulations to the team for this outstanding work.’
