The Royal Statistical Society’s Chief Executive, Sarah Cumbers, will give oral evidence to the UK Covid-19 Inquiry on 17 December, as part of its examination of the UK’s economic response to the pandemic (Module 9).
Module 9 is considering the economic interventions taken by the UK Government and the Devolved Administrations, and how data and evidence informed these decisions. The Society has previously submitted written evidence to the Inquiry, but this will be the first time an RSS representative has appeared in person to answer questions from the panel.
Sarah’s written evidence to the inquiry was drawn from members of our Public Statistics Advisory Group and COVID-19 taskforce, and included a range of recommendations around planning for future economic shocks, communication of economic statistics and the importance of statistics reflecting lived experience.
Further information will be available on the inquiry website, including live stream on the day, and we will share further information with members following the hearing.
The Society will continue to engage with the Inquiry as it progresses, supporting efforts to ensure that lessons from the pandemic include the importance of reliable, high-quality and independent statistics.
