Professor Guy Nason confirmed as next RSS president

We’re delighted to announce that Professor Guy Nason has been confirmed as RSS President-elect and will begin his term after Sir John Aston’s term concludes at the end of 2026.

Professor Nason is Chair in Statistics at Imperial College London and holds honorary positions at UCL’s Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health and the University of Bristol. He brings extensive experience in government advisory roles, including as co-chair of the Home Office Science Advisory Council and member of the National Statistician’s Expert User Advisory Committee. He also serves as deputy chair of the REF2029 Mathematical Sciences sub-panel and previously chaired the International Prize in Statistics Foundation.

A long-standing RSS fellow, Professor Nason was vice-president for academic affairs from 2016 to 2020, during which time, he contributed to our work on the Teaching Excellence Framework and voiced concerns over algorithmic grading during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Nason said, 'I am deeply honoured and truly delighted to have been elected President of the Royal Statistical Society. It is a privilege to again serve the Society. The Society has a long and unparalleled tradition of advancing Statistics in many spheres, addressing the key issues of the day for the benefit of all. I look forward to working with all members of the Society in these endeavours, especially as we approach the Society’s 200th anniversary in 2034.'

RSS Chief Executive Dr Sarah Cumbers added, 'I’m delighted that Guy will be our next president. He brings a remarkable breadth of experience, spanning both academic research and the practical application of statistics in policymaking. His thoughtful leadership and strong commitment to supporting others in the profession make him exceptionally well placed to guide the RSS into its next chapter.'
