RSS Council has recommended Professor Guy Nason as its choice for the next RSS president. If elected, he will take office following the conclusion of Professor Sir John Aston’s term at the end of 2026.
Guy is Chair in Statistics at Imperial College London, having previously been a Professor of Statistics at the University of Bristol. He is currently a member of the National Statistician’s Expert User Advisory Committee and co-chair of the Home Office’s Science Advisory Council. He has previously served as the chair of the International Prize in Statistics Foundation and on the UK Statistics Authority’s Technical Advisory Panel for Consumer Price Statistics.
A fellow of the RSS since 1992, Guy has played an active role in the Society. He served as Vice-President for Academic Affairs from 2016 to 2020, leading our work on areas such as the Teaching and Research Excellence Frameworks, and liaised with UKRI and its councils that support statistical research. He regularly worked with other academic societies on a range of issues, such as collaborating with the Edinburgh Mathematical Society to help secure increased maths research funding for Scotland. His roles in the Society have ranged from secretary of the Avon Local Group (1992-95) to more recent service as chair of the Research Section, and as member of both the National Statistics Advisory Group and the Covid-19 Task Force.
Guy was put forward by our President Nomination Committee which draws its membership from across the Society. In accordance with our charter and bylaws, Council invites RSS fellows to nominate an alternative, eligible and willing nominee from the fellowship.
Nominees must provide written consent to their nominators, confirming their willingness to stand for election and, if elected, to undertake the role from January 2027 until 31 December 2028. Any nomination must have the support of at least six RSS fellows. Nominations should be sent to Holly O'Brien, governance manager, by 31 July 2025. Should any alternative candidates be nominated by this time, an election will be held.
