Announcing new RSS officers for 2026

We are pleased to announce our next Vice-President for Public Understanding and Engagement as well as our new honorary officers for journals and public statistics, who begin their four-year terms in January 2026.

We’re delighted to announce Chris Brignell as our new Vice-President for Public Understanding and Engagement. Chris is Professor of Statistics and Mathematical Education at the Observatory for Mathematical Education, University of Nottingham. He has been a fellow of the Society for over 20 years and is currently on the Teaching Statistics Section committee. He will chair the Education Policy Advisory Group and will be supporting initiatives that help data and media professionals engage the public in statistical issues.

Our new Honorary Officer for Journals will be Brendan Murphy. Brendan will oversee the RSS journal collection, providing support and guidance to staff and volunteers in the development and management of the collection. A professor of statistics at University College Dublin and former member of RSS Council, Brendan’s background is in statistical modelling, and we very much look forward to working with him during this exciting period for our publications.

Finally, we’re thrilled to have David Caplan as our new Honorary Officer for Public Statistics. David will be taking forward the Society's work in public statistics with a focus on improving user engagement and responsiveness. He has been a member of the National (now Public) Statistics Advisory Group for the past five years and has had a career working at all levels of UK public services.

Our new officers will take over from Steve Gilmour, Sophie Carr and Paul Allin, who have all made exceptional contributions to the Society and the wider statistical community. We thank them all for their time, energy and expertise.
