As a member of the Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS), the RSS is pleased to announce the publication of the first ever Maths Manifesto, ahead of a likely UK general election this year. This landmark document outlines the collective vision of CMS and the ways we hope to increase maths and data literacy, improve public perceptions and maximise the impact and potential for innovation within the mathematical sciences in the UK.
Released on the same day as the Maths Summit, taking place today in the Science Museum, its vision covers a broad scope, with specific calls aimed at building on the UK’s history of excellence in innovation, at improving education for all ages and fostering interdisciplinarity across mathematical and scientific fields. The document also asks for greater integration of mathematical insights within policy decision making, a forward thinking approach to the technologies of the future and greater support for a diverse and inclusive community.
Finally, the formation of a new National Academy for the Mathematical Sciences is central to the vision, with the current proto-Academy a co-author of the paper. The RSS has also recently emphasised its support for the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci) in its individual consultation response.
CMS and AcadMathSci call on political parties and decision makers to support the sustained growth of the mathematical sciences in the UK by integrating these points into their policies.
