New joint editors have been appointed for our Series A, B and C journals, taking up their posts in January 2025 and replacing Bianca De Stavola (Series A), Qiwei Yao (Series B), and Janine Illian (Series C).
New joint editor for JRSS-A: Professor Nikos Tzavidis
Nikos is professor of statistical methodology at the University of Southampton. His current research focuses on topics in small area estimation, outlier robust estimation, quantile regression, applications of machine learning to official statistics and the integration of survey and geospatial data. Nikos’s work is supported by funding from the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the European Commission, the UK Office for National Statistics, FCDO, the United Nations and the World Bank. Nikos has served as head of department for Social Statistics and Demography and head of the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences at Southampton. Between 2021 and 2023, he served as vice-president of the International Association of Survey Statisticians and is currently member of the advisory board on ethics of the International Statistical Institute. Nikos currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, the Journal of Official Statistics, and International Statistical Review.
New joint editor for JRSS-B: Professor Xuming He
Xuming He, is the Kotzubei-Beckman Distinguished Professor and Department Chair of Statistics and Data Science at Washington University in St. Louis. Before joining Washington University in St. Louis, he held positions at the University of Michigan, National University of Singapore and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and he served as the program director of statistics at the National Science Foundation (USA).
He obtained his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include robust statistics, quanitle regression, Bayesian inference and data-adaptive inference. His interdisciplinary research spans from econometrics to public health.
He is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He serves as President (2023–25) of the International Statistical Institute. His earlier editorial experience includes co-editor of Journal of the American Statistical Association, associate editor of JRSS-B and associate editor of Annals of Statistics.
New joint editor for JRSS-C: Professor Thordis Thorarinsdottir
Thordis L. Thorarinsdottir is an associate professor of statistics at the University of Oslo. Her research focuses on the modelling of randomness and quantification of uncertainty in natural processes, probabilistic forecasting and forecast evaluation. Many of her developments require a combination of statistical theory and environmental process understanding to overcome data deficiencies, and she thus commonly collaborates with scientists from fields such as meteorology, hydrology and climate science.
She is currently an associated editor for the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C, and she has previously served as an associate editor for the International Journal of Forecasting, Annals of Applied Statistics and Environmetrics.
