The RSS has established a Teaching Statistics Section, providing a platform to collate and disseminate ideas and best practice in the teaching of statistics. It was approved by RSS Council in March 2022 as a Section, following its successful three-year run as a special interest group of the Society.
The section will mainly target statistics educators, including those working in post-18 education, higher education and professional training. It will promote teaching excellence in statistics to increase statistical literacy among students.
The Teaching Statistics Section is now looking for new members to serve on its committee. Committee members are actively involved in organising events (usually three or four per year), and preparing newsletters and other communications. Committee meetings are held four or five times a year, aiming to alternate between in-person and online meetings.
The Section is particularly interested in hearing from those with experience in providing training and development to professionals who are non-statisticians. They are also looking for a meetings secretary, who would have overall responsibility for coordinating the Section's events programme.
Expressions of interest should be emailed to Simon Harden (s.harden@ucl.ac.uk) by 8 July 2022. Please include a brief (~200 word) description of your experience in teaching statistics, why you would like to join the committee, and what you could offer the Section.
The RSS is committed to ensuring an inclusive and welcoming environment for all who care about good data and statistics.
