We are now accepting entries for our 2022 Campion Award for Excellence in Official Statistics, awarded in partnership with the UK Statistics Authority and Civil Service World. The award is for those working in UK government statistics and rewards good practice and innovation in producing and presenting statistics for the public good.
Awarded for work completed in the previous calendar year, it celebrates the role government statisticians play in answering some of society’s most important questions, from the impact of the pandemic to the effectiveness of our schools.
It is named in honour of former RSS president, the late Sir Harry Campion, who was also the first director of the UK Central Statistical Office, the forerunner to the Office for National Statistics. Last year’s winner was ONS for their analysis of Covid deaths by ethnicity, with highly commended also going to ONS for their comparison of all-cause mortality between European counties.
Dev Virdee, chair of the judging panel, commenting on this year’s launch, said: “Government statisticians have been central to our pandemic response and have had to work under pressure over the last two years to produce the statistics the UK needs. No doubt this year’s entries will be a further demonstration of the excellent and innovative work produced by the Government Statistical Service.”
Sir David Norgrove, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, said: “75 years on from the Statistics of Trade Act 1947, drafted by Sir Harry Campion, we remember his legacy and the powers he helped establish for official statisticians with this award. The Campion Award celebrates innovation in the production and presentation of official statistics. It is an opportunity for all those working on official data and statistics to be rewarded for their hard work and ingenuity, and for us to learn from each other’s successes.
“I look forward to finding out about how this year's finalists have innovated, adapted and collaborated to produce statistics for the public good.”
