RSS local groups in Scotland are all planning a number of outreach activities at this year’s Maths Week Scotland, which takes place 30 September – 6 October.
Now in its third year, the initiative celebrates the importance of maths in our everyday lives with several events aimed at engaging with young people. This is the first year that the RSS has made a coordinated contribution towards its success.
In Aberdeen, the RSS Highlands local group has organised for our current William Guy lecturer, Lee Fawcett (pictured), to give his ‘Storm of the Century!’ talk at a local secondary school on Friday 4 October 2019.
Members of the RSS Glasgow local group will visit seven primary schools across Glasgow over the next two weeks to run student activities on survey design; collecting data on their classmates and analysing the data using bar plots, pie charts and dot plots. More than 20 other schools have expressed interest and will be visited in the coming months.
RSS Edinburgh is organising an activity on how to solve encrypted messages as part of ‘event on offshore renewables with the RSS Environmental Stats Section on Tuesday 1 October.
Karen Facey, the RSS honorary officer for sections and local groups, said: ‘I’m delighted that our local groups in Scotland have been able to raise the profile of statistics in this year’s Maths Week Scotland, and help inspire the next generation of statisticians.’
