Congratulations to RSS fellows Peter Donnelly, Sylvia Richardson (pictured left) and Mahesh Parmar, who were all recognised in this year’s Birthday honours list.
Peter Donnelly, professor of statistical science at the University of Oxford and chief executive of Genomics plc, was given a knighthood for having made ‘seminal contributions to statistics and its application to human genetics for more than 30 years’, citing his work at the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium investigations and other work in the UK life sciences sector. Peter's work was recognised by the Royal Statistical Society in 2004 when he was awarded our Guy Medal in Silver.
The nominee for the next RSS presidency, Sylvia Richardson, was awarded a CBE for her services to medical statistics. Sylvia is director of the Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge.
Also recognised for services to medical statistics is Mahesh (Max) Parmar, director of the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at University College London, who received an OBE for services to medical research and clinical trials.
We were also pleased to see DFID Chief Scientific Adviser Charlotte Watts – the President’s invited lecturer at the RSS 2019 conference in September – made CMG - Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George.
