Mary Gregory
In this talk, Mary will outline the key messages from her 2024-25 William Guy Lecture for 5 – 11 year olds: From Sweets to Streets. She will also share learning from her experience of engaging primary school age children.
Nicola Rennie
In her talk, Nicola will discuss her aims and thought process when developing my RSS William Guy Lecture "From lab to patient: how statistics shapes decisions in medicine" aimed at 11-16 year olds. She will also share her experience of delivering the talks throughout the 2024-2025 academic year, including some of the challenges and things she has learnt along the way.
Mike Campbell
Mike's presentation will cover aspects of his Guy lecture to 16-18 year olds in 2024-25 and also some reflections on the experience. His lecture covered aspects of working on the Public Data Advisory Group (PDAG) during the COVID epidemic, advising on ways that Government could present statistics related to COVID.
Mary Gregory leads population, census and social statistics at the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Prior to this Mary has worked in roles across government. Mary is a trustee for National Numeracy and a member of the RSS Public Understanding and Education Advisory Group.
Nicola Rennie is a data visualisation specialist with a background in statistics and data science, who is interested in understanding how to effectively communicate complex quantitative ideas in an accessible way. She co-authored the Royal Statistical Society’s Best Practices for Data Visualisation guidance and is a member of the Editorial Board of Significance magazine, particularly focused on data visualisation. Nicola is also a committee member and secretary of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) Teaching Statistics Section Group. Previously, she was one of the RSS’s 2024-2025 William Guy Lecturers who recorded and delivered talks aimed at 11-16 year olds on the topic of using data and statistics to shape decision making in medicine and healthcare.
Mike Campbell is Emeritus Professor of Medical Statistics at the University of Sheffield and is author of around 300 papers in refereed journals and seven books.
