The RSS Social Statistics Section and the Italian Statistical Institute are organising a webinar on Data Integration for Official Statistics. The speakers will present recent Istat research on register-based census methods and the use of non-traditional (big data) sources such as AIS signals.

Since 2020, Italian population counts have been produced using only administrative data, marking a decisive step toward a fully register-based census. Drawing on international experiences, this presentation outlines the statistical framework developed to estimate population size using administrative sources. It also describes the role of surveys in supporting this estimation process.

Non-Traditional Data Sources for Official Statistics: Insights from AIS Data

The production system of official statistics is increasingly multi-sourced. Beyond sample surveys and administrative data, National Statistical Institutes are investing in “non-traditional” data sources—often referred to as big data—such as remote sensing images, mobile phone signals, and ship-transmitted signals. This presentation provides an overview of ongoing research at Istat on integrating these data sources into official statistics. As a concrete example, it focuses on the use of AIS (Automatic Identification System) data—signals transmitted by ships for safety purposes—for the production of maritime statistics, discussing methodological challenges and
