Support our work in public understanding, engagement and education by joining the advisory group

We are looking for members interested in joining the RSS advisory group led by our Vice President for Public Understanding, Engagement and Education, Chris Brignell. The group works to support the public in understanding and meaningfully engaging with the data and statistics that influence their lives.

Last year, the group undertook a strategic planning exercise and identified two key areas of focus: supporting public understanding of AI and improving the teaching of statistics and data in schools. This year, our focus will be on tackling questions such as:
  • How should AI be used in decision-making in the public sector?
  • What role does AI have in education?
  • What should people know about the statistical and probabilistic nature of AI in order to use it more effectively?
  • How can we improve the teaching and assessment of data and statistics
  • And how should we be supporting educators to teach about data and statistics in a confident and engaging way?

We are especially looking to recruit members who have expertise in public understanding and engagement and those with a specific background in AI. Our advisory groups are diverse and represent professionals from a range of backgrounds.

Members are appointed to the group for an initial four-year term and are expected to attend seven one-hour meetings each year and contribute to the group’s work between meetings, for example by commenting on draft documents or representing the group at external meetings.

If you are interested in joining the advisory group, please complete this short form by 12pm on Thursday 19 February.

If you have any questions, please email policy@rss.org.uk
