Get involved in RSS action on climate change: Join the Climate Change Task Force

We are inviting applications from RSS members to join the Climate Change Task Force (CCTF).

The task force, led by co-chairs Andrew Garrett and David Stephenson, drives the Society’s response on climate change and net zero issues. Established in 2023, the task force has been focused on improving public understanding of the statistical challenges and evidence underpinning climate change and net zero. This has included developing a series of accessible explainers on key topics such as the 1.5°C global warming target, extreme weather events and the role of AI in weather forecasting.

This is a critical time for climate statistics. Recent losses of climate-related data in the United States are likely to affect the international scientific community’s ability to sustain essential climate research. Climate statistics depend on continuous, long-term observations; when data is lost, those gaps cannot be recovered. Joining the CCTF is therefore a timely opportunity to meaningfully shape our work in this vital and evolving area.

We are seeking to recruit two new members this summer. We are keen to build a diverse and inclusive group, with representation from across the public sector, industry and academia, and spanning a range of expertise in climate and environmental statistics. We particularly welcome applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, including those based in or connected to the Global South.

Members are expected to attend monthly meetings (alternating morning and late afternoon UK time) and contribute to the task force’s work between meetings – for example, by writing or reviewing explainers, or proposing new outputs.

If you are interested in joining the Climate Change Task Force, please complete this short form by Friday 24th July.

If you have any questions, please email policy@rss.org.uk
