Our work on artificial intelligence 

With advancing technology and increasing numbers of users, questions around AI have become increasingly pressing. 

Many RSS members working in both data science and statistics are involved in the development, evaluation, and deployment of AIs. It is also a priority for the RSS to advocate for the responsible and ethical use of data and statistics – including in the use of AI. 

Our work on AI involves: 

  • Representing the perspectives of data science and AI practitioners to government 
  • Supporting appropriate evaluation and regulation of AI systems 
  • Advocating for the ethical use of AI in public life. 

This work is led by our AI Task Force.  

We have published a series of papers outlining the importance of statistical thinking to using AI safely, effectively and ethically, and setting out why AI regulation requires statistical capability.

We have also begun work on improving public understanding of AI, starting with our FAQs on statistics, misinformation and AI. This work is driven by our Education Policy and Public Engagement Advisory Group.
