Register your interest to attend RSS-ONS-OSR roundtable on survey methodology

The RSS, Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) are planning a series of roundtables with the objective of discussing the best practice and latest thinking and how this might be applied to address statistical challenges.

The first roundtable will focus on survey methodology. Survey response rates are declining across the world, and the problem is especially sharp in the UK. The challenge that this trend poses for the UK statistical system has featured in all of the Lievesley Review of the UK Statistics Authority, OSR’s Report on ONS Economic Statistics and the Devereux Review of the ONS – and the ONS has published a Survey Improvement and Enhancement Plan in response.

This is an important and timely topic, and we are pleased that the ONS and OSR have partnered with us to hear our members’ perspectives on how novel methodology may help strengthen ONS surveys.

The roundtable is planned for 3pm to 5pm on Wednesday 23 July. It is an in-person meeting that will be held at the ONS office at Marsham Street.

The key questions that we will ask at this roundtable are:

  • What statistical techniques are available to help make survey responses as representative as possible?

  • What statistical techniques can help draw reliable conclusions from unrepresentative survey data?

If you have insight on these questions and would like to attend the roundtable to discuss them, please complete this form to register your interest. This is an in-person event and, unfortunately, the number of places we have are limited. In addition to invited speakers, we expect to be able to invite 3 to 5 additional people who have registered an interest. The decision on who to invite will be based on ensuring that a range of views and novel insights are represented at the meeting.

If you have thoughts on these questions but aren’t able to attend the event, please do also respond using the form and we can share your responses with the ONS and OSR.

Register your interest here by noon on 14 July.
